Image of The Week – 74 (Jack Vettriano)
Jack Vettriano – The Weight
Oil on canvas 24 x 20 inches
I recently watched a fascinating profile of Jack Vettriano* on BBC World News which was part of a series asking “What Do Artists Do All Day?”
What became clear is that his art is popular, but that his fame wasn’t sought. Not that he suffers for his art, but he is meticulous approach to his images which are one step removed from familiarity and some say, enigmatic.
The Singing Butler, painted in 1992, has been reproduced on calendars, postcards and posters, yet he painted it “simply because early on in his career a woman remarked that he was “good at painting beaches,” and because “people in love usually go to the beach.”
“I’d rather my paintings were hung on people’s walls than be stuck in the basement of the Tate.”
